The Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is a district-level Farm Science Centre established under the aegis of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi. The primary mandate of KVKs is to ensure the rapid and effective transfer of advanced agricultural technologies from research institutions to farmers’ fields. These centers act as critical linkages between scientific research and field-level application, aiming to uplift the farming community through practical knowledge and technological innovation.
The Krishi Vigyan Kendra in Darrang district plays a significant role in advancing agricultural practices within the region. Located in the North Bank Plain Agro-Climatic Zone of Assam, the operational area of KVK Darrang includes diverse agricultural systems and farming challenges. The KVK tailors its approach to meet the specific needs of this agro-ecological zone by providing location-specific technological interventions and support to farmers.
The major thrust areas of KVK Darrang include technology assessment and refinement, where various agricultural innovations are tested under local field conditions to evaluate their feasibility and performance. The KVK conducts frontline demonstrations to showcase the practical advantages of these technologies to the farming community. In addition, it conducts capacity-building programs aimed at empowering farmers, farm women, rural youth, and extension personnel. These training programs cover a broad range of topics such as improved crop varieties, integrated nutrient and pest management, livestock and poultry farming, horticulture, soil health, irrigation methods, and farm mechanization.
Established in the year 2007, KVK Darrang is a project sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and is managed by Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat. Since its inception, the KVK has been actively involved in promoting sustainable agricultural development through knowledge dissemination, field trials, and advisory services.
Currently, the office of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Darrang is located in its permanent building at Gelaidingi, Mangaldai, Darrang. With a dedicated infrastructure now in place, the KVK has further strengthened its capacity to deliver field-based services, organize training programs, and conduct research-extension activities more effectively. The establishment of the permanent campus has enhanced the KVK’s operational efficiency, allowing for better coordination with stakeholders and greater outreach to the farming community.
Through its consistent efforts and farmer-centric approach, KVK Darrang continues to serve as a vital institution for agricultural advancement, aiming to transform traditional farming practices into more productive, sustainable, and economically viable systems.
